In the opening exhibition fight of the 1994 K-1 WGP, Naoyuki "The Grappler" Taira battles Koji Yamazaki in a unique match: full gloves but submissions allowed. Taira uses the ruleset to his full advantage en route to the win. He is supposedly the inspiration behind manga character Baki the Grappler.
